Question:
Hi Mr. Davis, I have seen information that you have posted on your wall about small businesses. I am interested in becoming a small business bakery owner. I have a passion for baking. I'll be forty in four months and I'm not getting any younger so I wanted to know if you could give me some tips, advice and resources for single minority women. I gladly appreciate it any advice given. Thanks. —Theresa Foggie
Answer:
Theresa. Congratulations on deciding that you want to bake your way to success. You can be a baker without owning a bakery. Today I had lunch with a woman in Los Angeles who bakes custom cakes for individuals and some restaurants without having the overhead of a bricks & mortar operation. Start right where you are. Tell friends that you will bake for dollars. Look at the price of your ingredients, add in money for your time, electricity etc. and price your products. When you reach the point of baking your buns off and selling enough to support your passion, then consider an actual bakery. When that time arrives, consider taking over an existing establishment that isn't suceeding. Best Wishes.
